Topic: Moderating Knowledge Sharing

Speaker:  Evonne McCabe, SKM

Evonne will be talking about the importance of facilitating or moderating Communities of Practice. Many organizations are complex and house a number of communities of practice (or similar groups). For any number of reasons these CoPs can result in silos of specialised information, often missing opportunities to transfer knowledge outside their community.

A role focused on moderating the communities and guiding them to more effective collaboration, both within the group and in an organization, is how we can achieve more from the investment in CoPs.

Evonne will outline some of the things they do at SKM to leverage collaboration tools to maximize the effectiveness of CoPs and why CoP facilitation/moderation is needed to achieve this. She’ll also talk about the tendency for coordinators to focus on tools instead of spending time to facilitate the communities, and how her role plays a crucial part in addressing this issue. She’ll talk about her role in general and how it has evolved with time and as the value of CoPs is increasingly recognised in the organisation.

About our Speaker:

Evonne McCabe has worked specifically in the Knowledge Management arena for around 6 years with SKM. It seemed like a natural progression after working in community engagement and internal communication roles for around 20 years prior. Her passion lies around knowledge capture and access, and this has driven her strategies in the workplace, particularly concerning Communities of Practice.
Sinclair Knight Merz is a leading projects firm, with global capability in strategic consulting, engineering and project delivery. It operates across Asia Pacific, the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, deploying some 7,000 people from more than 40 offices.
